From “I’d Never Do That” to Faithful Prayer: Jim’s Story

Jim never planned to become a prayer caller. In fact, it was the one role he was sure he would never do.

Jim and his wife Andi first came to Love INC as participants in the New Hope Program from 2013 to 2015. During their first year, Jim believed he could make progress on his own—he just needed the right information. But after a year of trying and still feeling stuck, he agreed to take the next step and be matched with a mentor. That decision changed everything. Through that experience, Jim discovered something deeper: real transformation doesn’t happen through information alone. It happens through accountability, community, and relationship.

Not long after graduating, Jim and Andi began serving in 2015, helping teach program orientations. When that role eventually came to an end, they started asking an important question: Where is God calling us next? Jim had one clear answer—anywhere but prayer calls.

He appreciated the calls he had received as a participant, but leading them himself felt uncomfortable and outside his comfort zone. And yet, less than two weeks after saying he would never do it, Jim was asked to step into that exact role. He recognized something in that moment: this might not just be a need—it might be an invitation. So he said yes.

Through those weekly calls, Jim began to see God at work in powerful ways. As he prayed with clients, listened to their stories, and walked alongside them in their struggles, his own prayer life began to grow and deepen. Over time, those calls became more than a task; they became a ministry. Jim built meaningful relationships rooted in trust. Clients opened up about heavy situations, knowing he would faithfully bring their needs before the Lord. He saw prayers answered. He witnessed growth. And he found himself being changed in the process.

One of his most impactful moments came through a difficult experience. On one particular day, Jim was feeling overwhelmed and distracted by concerns for his daughter, who was serving as a missionary in Eastern Europe during a time of conflict. When he got on a call with a client who was eager for prayer, he made a comment about being short on time. The response was immediate; the client shut down. In that moment, Jim realized something important: prayer isn’t something to rush. People aren’t interruptions. Every call matters. He later apologized, and what followed was one of the most meaningful prayer relationships he experienced—lasting three years as that client continued through the New Hope Community. What began as a moment of failure became a moment of growth.

And that’s what Jim’s story reflects so clearly: God doesn’t just work through our strengths—He works through our willingness. Over the years, Jim saw a shift in himself. He became less focused on his own needs and more oriented toward others as he prayed, encouraged, and walked alongside his brothers and sisters in Christ.

As Jim steps away from this season of serving, what he will miss most is simple but profound: the people.

The conversations.
The relationships.
The opportunity to pray.

Because somewhere along the way, the role he never wanted became one of the most meaningful parts of his life.

This is Mission in Motion—when God uses a simple “yes” to transform not just others, but us.
